Glass Street Community Bus Shelter Project
Calling local artists! Glass House Collective is still accepting applications for the Glass Street Community Bus Shelter Project. We’re looking for visual and graphic artists or teams over the age of 18 who currently reside, work or attend a university within 50 miles of Chattanooga, TN. Think you fit the mold? Click here to apply – but hurry! Applications must be received by May 17, 2013 at 4:00 pm.
Over the past year, Glass House Collective has been impressed and humbled by the people who call this community home. Glass Street residents have a heart, a spirit and a willingness you can actually feel.
Now, there’s an exciting momentum building around them, and we want it to show. That’s why we’re inviting creative individuals to help us illustrate the story of Glass Street, to transform the energy we feel into an energy we can see.
As part of our mission to bring life back to this neighborhood, GHC is collaborating with Public Art Chattanooga and CARTA. Together, we’re seeking proposals for 2D designs that will be wrapped on bus shelters around the community. Three designs will be selected and featured for two years, beginning in summer 2013, and the artists will receive a $2,000 honorarium for their design.
We couldn’t be more excited about this project, especially after seeing the results of similar initiatives in recent years. Bus shelter artwork has added blasts of personality to city streets across the country. Take New Orleans’ Canal Street: In 2008, the world-famous stretch was transformed into a public art exhibition, thanks to the original work of artists from across the state.
In 2012, Durham, NC followed suit, bringing life and color to the city’s bus shelters. Not surprisingly, the vibrant artwork was incredibly popular among residents. One local said the project was a symbol of hope and growth, a sign “that better days are coming.” Another said the project profoundly enhanced the value of the shelters: no longer do they simply protect riders – they now “delight and inspire community pride.”
Now, it’s Glass Street’s turn. We want local artists to get creative, get colorful and get inspired. Together, we can make the ordinary extraordinary.
