MLK Volunteer Opportunity
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day, volunteers at Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park will join volunteers across the City of Chattanooga in a clean-up day, collecting trash. CHCH volunteers will focus on the area around Sherman Reservation on the north end of Missionary Ridge. Work will also include clearing brush and debris from a sidewalk to improve visitor access to the site. The project will last from 9 am until approximately 2:30 pm (EST).
Volunteers have been recruited from a local high school and will be joined by residents of the surrounding neighborhood. Additionally, neighbors are encouraged to join the clean-up effort by collecting trash around their homes and the Glass Street neighborhood, a traditionally underserved neighborhood. All supplies and tools will be supplied by the National Park Service.
Volunteers will wear sturdy, close-toed shoes and long pants. Water is provided, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles. Lunch will be provided by the Friends of Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park. After the project, volunteers are encouraged to join programming at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center regarding the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Programs will include the dedication of a new mural and a conversation with the artist.
